The 22nd biennial conference of The International Society for Ecological Modelling (ISEM), under the theme eco: model:spaces, will bring together scientists from all professions and applications that deal with the use of ecological models and systems ecology.

Everything that happens, happens somewhere. Alluding to the motto of this year’s conference, eco:model:spaces, the spatial perspective can integrate components and drivers of complex ecological systems through their shared location in the environment. While data was scarce in ecology and often connected to labour-intensive field work, we are now witnessing a data revolution. Sensors in miniature tags up to satellite platforms are ubiquitous. They capture data in an ever-increasing volume, velocity and variety. 90% of the world’s data has been captured in the last two years. While this development has started in urban, human environments, the big data wave has also reached ecology. Most of these data carry their spatial signature. For ecological process models, the unique spatial identifier opens rich possibilities for model data fusion and validation at the interface of hypothesis-driven and data-driven models.

Salzburg shall be the inspiring space for the Ecological Modelling community to meet, discuss and share ideas. In this conference, ecological modellers will join in their ongoing effort in advancing the concepts and methods of ecological modelling to develop ecological theory in a wide range of topics and modelling approaches:
